Decks

Decks Built From the Footings Up

A deck is a structure that has to handle snow load, freeze-thaw cycles and a crowd at a graduation party. What you walk on matters, but what’s underneath matters more.

We set footings below the frost line, size beams and joists for the span, and use the correct hangers and fasteners. Where a deck attaches to the house, the ledger board is bolted to the framing and flashed so water can’t get behind it. A poorly flashed ledger is one of the most common reasons decks rot from the inside.

Plenty of lots around Canonsburg, Washington and the South Hills slope away from the house. That can mean tall posts, bracing, multi-level decks and long stair runs, and we design for all of it.

Materials

Choosing Deck Materials

Pressure-Treated Lumber

The lowest upfront cost and a classic look. Plan to clean and re-stain or seal it every few years.

Composite Decking

Capped composite boards from manufacturers such as TimberTech and Trex resist fading and staining and don’t need staining. Warranty coverage follows each manufacturer’s terms.

Railings

Wood, composite or aluminum railings, built to code height and baluster spacing.

Stairs & Landings

Comfortable rise and run, solid stringers and landings where long runs need a break.

Lighting & Details

Post-cap and stair lighting, privacy screens, built-in benches and skirting.

Patios & Walls

Ground-level concrete patios and retaining walls to go with the deck.

Porches

Porches, Porticos and Covered Patios

Front porches on older homes in Washington County take a beating: floorboards rot at the edges, columns lose their bases, and porch roofs sag or leak where they meet the house. We rebuild porches from the framing up, with new floors, columns, railings and beadboard ceilings.

Because we’re also roofers, the porch roof is done right. We tie it into the main roof with proper flashing and use the right material for a low-slope roof, so the new porch doesn’t become a new leak.

We also build porticos over front doors and roofed patios out back, matched to your home’s roof and trim. Want to see a color first? Try our shingle color picker.

Repair or Replace

Should You Repair or Replace Your Deck?

Some decks need new boards and railings. Others need to come down. Warning signs include soft or spongy boards, railings that move when you lean on them, rusted hangers or fasteners, a ledger with no flashing, and posts sitting directly on the ground. We inspect the structure, explain what we find, and tell you honestly whether a resurfacing is enough or a rebuild is the safer choice.

Recent example: a Canonsburg 20×20 deck rebuild with new stairs down to the hot tub, done alongside a new roof (2023).

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a deck?

In most Western Pennsylvania municipalities, yes, especially for decks attached to the house or raised off the ground. We handle the permit and inspections.

Composite or wood?

Wood costs less upfront. Composite costs more but doesn’t need staining. We’ll price both so you can compare.

Can you add a roof over my deck or patio?

Yes. As roofers, we can build a covered porch or patio roof and tie it into your existing roof properly.

When should I schedule a deck project?

Spring and summer book up fastest. Planning over the winter gives time for design, permits and materials, so construction can start as soon as the weather allows.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Deck and porch projects start with a free estimate. Call (412) 498-4299.
