Local Homes

Washington’s Housing Stock, and What It Needs

Washington has a wider range of homes than most towns its size. Around the courthouse and in the East Washington Historic District there are late-1800s and early-1900s brick homes and frame Queen Anne houses with steep roofs, turrets, wraparound porches and plenty of trim. Those roofs have more valleys, more flashing and more places for water to get in, and the porch roofs often need their own repair.

Out in Canton, Chartiers, North Franklin and South Franklin townships there are a lot of mid-century brick ranches and split-levels with simple roofs. Many of them are on their second or third layer of shingles, which means a full tear-off and a check of the decking underneath.

Subdivisions built in South Strabane and North Strabane in the 1990s and 2000s are reaching the age when original roofs and builder-grade siding wear out. Updating both at once lets us coordinate the flashing, trim and gutters between them.

Weather

Built for Washington County Weather

Washington County winters swing above and below freezing, sometimes in the same day. That freeze-thaw cycle opens up worn flashing and lets ice dams form on low-slope porch roofs and along the eaves. In summer, thunderstorms bring strong straight-line winds and the occasional hail, and mature trees around older neighborhoods drop limbs on roofs and gutters.

Hillside lots add their own problem: a lot of runoff, quickly. Properly sized gutters and downspouts that carry water away from the foundation are an inexpensive way to protect a basement. When storms do damage, we offer same-day emergency roof repair and document the damage for your insurance claim.

Around Town

Working Around Washington

Washington is the county seat, and its history shows in the buildings: the 1900 Beaux-Arts Washington County Courthouse, Washington & Jefferson College, the LeMoyne House (a stop on the Underground Railroad) and the 1788 Bradford House, home of Whiskey Rebellion leader David Bradford. The homes around them deserve careful work, and so do the newer ones near Tanger Outlets and The Meadows off Racetrack Road.

Besides the city we work in East Washington, Canton, Chartiers, North Franklin, South Franklin, South Strabane and North Strabane townships, and nearby in Meadow Lands, Eighty Four, Hickory, Scenery Hill and Claysville. Read more on our Washington County page.
