Drafty or Foggy Windows? Repair vs. Replace in Canonsburg

I’m Devin Orsi, owner of Peak Precision Contracting in Canonsburg. We’re a collective of tradespeople covering interior and exterior renovations, roofing, siding, gutters, windows, water mitigation, and more, and we’re Pella certified for window installation.

If your windows feel drafty, stick, or fog up between the panes, you’re probably wondering whether a repair will do or whether it’s time for replacement windows in Canonsburg or Peters Township. Fall is a good time to sort that out, before the first hard freeze. Here’s how I’d think it through. Estimates are free.

New windows bring in light and help keep cold air out of the room.

Signs your windows are telling you something

  • A draft you can feel. Hold your hand near the frame on a windy day. Cold air around the sash or trim means the seal or the fit isn’t doing its job.
  • Fog or moisture between the panes. That usually means the sealed glass unit has failed. Wiping it won’t fix it.
  • Sticking, jamming, or windows that won’t stay open. Warped frames, worn hardware, or settling can all be the cause.
  • Condensation or water stains on the sill. Moisture that keeps showing up around a window can point to a leak, and a leak can mean rot behind the trim.
  • Rot, soft wood, or peeling paint around the frame. Wood that’s gone soft is a sign water has been getting in for a while.

Repair or replace?

Not every window needs to come out. A sash that sticks may need adjustment. A worn weatherstrip or failed caulk line can sometimes be fixed. Replacement usually makes more sense when:

  • the glass has failed seals (fogging between panes),
  • the frame is rotted or warped,
  • the window is hard to operate or can’t be locked securely, or
  • you’re already planning other exterior work and would rather handle it all at once.

When I look at a window, I’ll tell you plainly which category it falls into. If a repair is enough, I’ll say so on the estimate.

What happens during a window replacement

  1. Walkthrough and measurements. We look at each window, check the frame and surrounding wall for moisture damage, and measure carefully. A bad measurement is a bad window.
  2. Choosing the window. We’ll talk through style, materials, and options, including Pella products, and how they fit your home.
  3. Installation. The old unit comes out, we check what’s behind it, and the new window is set, flashed, sealed, and trimmed.
  4. Cleanup and a final walkthrough. We leave the work area tidy and go over operation and locks with you.

Because we’re a general contractor, one team can also handle the surrounding work: trim, drywall, paint, siding, or flooring that’s been affected. That means fewer phone calls for you.

Why fall is a good time

Western Pennsylvania winters are hard on windows. Cold nights, wind-driven rain, and freeze-thaw cycles all find weak spots. Looking at your windows now, before the heating season is in full swing, gives you time to schedule the work and avoid doing it in a deep freeze.
