Ice Dam Prevention in Upper St. Clair Before Winter

Peak Precision Contracting is a family-owned general contractor based in Canonsburg, a collective of tradespeople who handle interior and exterior renovations, roofing, siding, gutters, storm and insurance claims, water mitigation, and mold remediation. Roof leak detection is our specialty, and ice dams are one of the winter problems that send homeowners looking for that specialty every year.

We’re still in mid-October, with fall rain and leaves on the roof, but the first hard freeze isn’t far off around Upper St. Clair and the South Hills. Ice dams form when meltwater refreezes at the cold eaves. Once that ridge of ice is there, water backs up under the shingles and into the attic and walls. Here’s what causes ice dams, what you can check now, and how we prevent and repair the damage. Glad to come out and give you an estimate.

What an ice dam is (and why Upper St. Clair roofs get them)

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that builds along the lower edge of the roof, usually over the eaves and gutters. Warm air in the attic melts snow higher on the roof. That water runs down to the cold overhang, freezes again, and the ridge grows. Water then pools behind the dam and can work under shingles, through flashing, and into the house.

Upper St. Clair homes see the full Western PA pattern: freeze-thaw cycles, wet snow, and roofs that hold leaves in the valleys after a windy fall. Older homes with thin attic insulation or weak ventilation are especially vulnerable, but even newer roofs can ice-dam if heat is escaping into the attic or gutters are packed with debris.

What to check before the first freeze

You can do most of this from the ground. Please stay off a wet or leaf-covered roof.

  • Gutters and downspouts. Leaves and seed pods clog the eaves right when you need meltwater to drain. Clear them, and make sure downspouts carry water away from the foundation. Our gutter guards page covers longer-term options if clogging is a yearly fight.
  • Roof edge and shingles. Look for missing, curled, or lifted shingles along the eaves and in valleys. Wind and fall storms pull them loose.
  • Attic warmth. On a cold morning, frost patterns on the roof or unusually warm spots in the attic can point to heat loss. Check that attic insulation is even and that baffles and vents aren’t blocked.
  • Exhaust and bathroom fans. Fans that dump moist air into the attic instead of outdoors push heat and moisture into the roof deck.
  • Prior leak stains. Brown marks on ceilings near exterior walls after last winter often mark where an ice dam pushed water inside.

How we prevent ice dams (and fix the damage)

Prevention beats emergency tarping in February. Because we’re a general contractor and an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor — the highest tier available, with the highest tier of warranty available in the marketplace — we can address the roof, the attic, and the interior damage as one project instead of sending you to three trades.

  • Roof repair and replacement. Worn eaves, failed ice-and-water shield, and tired shingles get fixed or replaced. We handle roof replacement in Upper St. Clair and nearby towns with proper underlayment at the eaves.
  • Leak detection first. If water is already inside, we trace it to the real entry point before we talk about drywall. That’s the same approach we use for storm work and for roof repair in Canonsburg.
  • Attic ventilation and insulation. Sealing attic bypasses, restoring soffit and ridge ventilation, and evening out insulation cut the melt-refreeze cycle that builds dams.
  • Gutters and drainage. Cleaning, repairing, or upgrading gutters so meltwater has somewhere to go.
  • Interior repairs. Stained drywall, wet insulation, and secondary mold concerns get handled after the roof is dry. We also do water mitigation when a leak has soaked finishes.

We’re a 24/7 emergency roof repair team when an active leak won’t wait, and we offer optional craftsmanship warranties of up to 25 years on our work. Details of our system warranties are on our roof warranty page.

Insurance, storms, and ice dams

Sudden storm damage is often handled differently from slow wear. Ice dam leaks sit in a gray area that depends on your policy and how the damage started. Peak Precision is an insurance claim specialist; we work with adjusters and document what we find. We never offer to cover or waive deductibles. If you’re sorting out a claim after wind, hail, or winter water, our storm damage and insurance claims page explains how we support that process.

Ice dam FAQ

Can ice dams form even if my roof is fairly new?

Yes. A new roof helps, but heat loss into the attic, clogged gutters, and blocked ventilation can still create dams. The roof surface and the attic conditions both matter.

Should I climb up and chip ice off the roof?

No. Chipping ice is a fall risk and can damage shingles. Call for an assessment instead, especially if water is already inside.

Do you work in Upper St. Clair and the South Hills?

Yes. We work throughout Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Bridgeville, Canonsburg, Peters Township, and the rest of the South Hills and Washington County. See also roof replacement in Bethel Park and our 24/7 emergency roofing page.

Do you offer estimates?

Yes. We’ll look the roof and attic conditions over and walk you through what we found before any work starts.
